Alpacas return after 200 years

The first alpaca herd has slowly walked into their old-new home in Cusco, Peru.

Once the newest treking route to Machu Picchu was designed, the first step was to study the environment and especially the quality of the grasses before the Reintroduction program of Andean camels could begin. The project consists of bringing alpacas from the Vilcanota region to Cordiellera Vilcabamba. The funds have been colected thanks to the successful partnership with Dragoman – an overland travel agency from the United Kingdom. Finaly the alpacas return to the area after having been extinct for 200 years. This helps the economy of the local communities that have received the alpacas as a donation. Further small herds will follow this first one soon, in order to preserve the genome of the species as they spread over their original habitat.

In this way Andina Travel, the local Cusco tour operator, commits to the triple-bottom-line of sustainable tourism outlined by Sustainable Travel International (Environmental Practices, Socio Cultural Practices, and Economic Practices).
