Ruben, Congratulations on Your Graduation as a Mountain Guide!

Yamil, Ruben, PieroRuben (in the picture in the middle between Yamil on the left and Piero on the right) has recently graduated from the Antonio Lorena Institute here in Cusco, Peru and became our newest mountain guide – one example of an opportunity that redistributing the tourism income can open up.

Ruben Condori was born in Cuncani – one of the Lares communities. This remote village in the Peruvian Andes is where the successful partnership of Dragoman Overland and Andina Travel began. Years of promoting community development and sustainable tourism together (Andina Travel and Dragoman Overland) started with rebuilding the Cuncani elementary school. The school has given local children from the near villages access to education in their native language Quechua much closer to their homes. These days we are especially proud of the former Cuncani student Ruben that has recently graduated here in Cusco as a tour guide. Once he finished the elementary school he continued in a secondary school in Urubamba in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. After graduating secondary school, he studied the Antonio Lorena Institute an institution of higher education in the province capital Cusco. When it was his turn to fulfill the required amount of field practice Ruben started joining our trekking groups. He not only learnt the camping and trekking routine, but also activated his English. Along the way he gained the trust and affection of the clients with his natural charm and pro-active attitude.

No one is left behind!

Ruben continues a family tradition of working in tourism that started his father Raymundo 15 years ago. Raymundo’s been with us since the beginnings of Andina Travel, Cusco. He has been working for us as a horse wrangler on the different trekking routes that go through Lares Valley to Machu Picchu. He is also one of the important community leaders.
